Powwow!

We have been learning all about the Native Peoples of California. As luck would have it, Cal State San Bernardino hosted a real Powwow that we visited. The kids loved seeing all the fancy Indian regalia and watching the dancers get ready for the dance competition. We liked seeing all the authentic Native American beading, pottery and other crafts that we had been reading about. We asked this Native American to get his picture, but apparently both the models
and the camera man were having issues at that moment! Oh well.

The boys also loved the Fry Bread.

We celebrated all that we had learned at our own Powwow with friends. Each child taught us something about the Native cultures from their "expert" state. Tanner dressed as Camawait, Sacajawea's brother, and told the kids her story and a little about the Shoshone Indians of Idaho.
Hunter was "Speeding Cheetah" and taught everyone about how the Blackfoot Indians of Montana love to dance at Powwows.
We made Native American drums...

beaded moccasins,

made a hoop game from willow branches,

and then played the game.
There are two new papooses this year in our school group, so things have been more low key. But, the kids always manage to have a good time and hopefully learn something in the process! Notice which two kids want to be the dancers at our little mock Powwow. Yes, Hoyal kids have lots of energy!
