More Civil War Fun

The Charter School we belong to did a field trip to Riley's Farms for a Civil War Day.  It was AWESOME!  Probably one of my favorite field trips ever!

We were put into regiments, we were Tennesse 2nd.  Tanner was the flag bearer for our group.

At our first station, we learned to march and fire our "mustick" like a real soldier.  It was fun having my dad with us for the day.

 Then we learned what the "hospitals" were like on the battle field.  Let's just say I am glad I was not a real soldier during this time!

Next, we played baseball with a stick and ragball. Very fun! 

We also learned some of the typical chores the mothers and wives left at home would have done...

A debate was held in Maryland as to whether it should succeed, join the Union, or stay neutral.  Here is Tanner giving a fiery argument about why Maryland should stay neutral.

After our lunch break, where we ate a soldiers ration of hardtack and jerky, we marched off to war.

Is this little one excited about going to war, or happy she finally has enough hair for pigtails (which I am very excited about!)

 Oh no, our regiment has fallen!  I guess we knew that would happen when we were assigned to the South!  For the record, I am glad the South lost, but I guess someone has to be on their side at a reenactment!

As we marched down the hill, after the battle, I had to take this picture.  Another beautiful day in Oak Glen.  The picture DOES NOT do the scenery justice!

At the end, the actors, I mean soldiers, gave a very heartfelt speech about honoring all of our veterans.  It was a great conclusion to a wonderful day!

Recent School Happenings...

Possessors of the Land

We met together with our school friends to present what we had learned during our "Possessors of the Land" component.

Hunter made marbles, and then taught the kids how to make them and play the game...

Tanner did a report on communication during Colonial Days, very different from the Facebook world we live in!

 One of the mom's made these cute as can be tri-corn hat cookies.  I had to get a picture before they were all gobbled up...

Not nearly as cute but very authentic, we made pumpkin pudding.  Pretty good, although I think the kids prefer sugar instead of molasses in their pudding!

Abraham Lincoln 

I took some of the older kids to a Lincoln play, and then to a Lincoln Shrine in Redlands.  It was a fun play and the shrine was very inspirational.  Obviously, our Civil War study is supposed to come at the end of the year so we can study it chronologically in respect to the Colonial time, but all these neat Civil War things keep popping up, so we have to take advantage of them!

Boys Book Club

Book Club this month was Daniel at the Siege of Boston.  It was a great spy book and I learned a lot from reading it.  I think everyone had a great time at book club.  I had to take a picture of the boys sitting on our new couch, because we finally have seating for more than four people in our living room and I am really excited about that!

Knott's

Our family played hooky from work and school yesterday to hang out at Knott's Berry Farm.  

A beautiful day + two for one passes + NO lines= A FUN FAMILY Day!

Ladd and Tanner spent a lot of time going on the big roller coasters, so they are not equally represented in the pictures.  Everyone over 30 on this trip realized roller coasters are meant for twenty-somethings and younger, not old people!  I think we all woke up with a neck ache this morning, especially Ladd who went on EVERYTHING and realized it was his last trip on many of the rides :(
