Eine Kleine Classical

We kicked off our next topic of study, the Classical Time period of music and Neoclassical period in art with a visit from Mozart!  He spoke to us about his life-with German accent and all!, taught us how to lead music, and taught us about the instruments in the orchestra.

Each child had a clue under their chair to help them to figure out which instrument they would be in the orchestra.  Hunter was the Grandma of the strings-the Harp! Tanner was drums in the percussion section.  After the kids got their instruments, they sat in the appropriate place in the orchestra pit.  It was a really fun and meaningful activity!  Then, Mozart lead the "orchestra" in playing some of his songs!

After that, we headed over to an Opera workshop.  Two talented ladies from teh Redlands Community Opera Theater taught the kids how to be an "Opera Singer for a Day."  It was a great experience for my boys and we all learned a lot.

Charity had fun singing too!

This was a really fun day but what I loved best of all was how the boys were so inspired they came home that day and composed their own music!  Since Hunter can't read music yet, he played a tune and Tanner wrote down the notes just like Daddy Mozart did for his son.  What a great way to internalize what they just learned!

So cute that they were working together on their music - I love it!

Also, not classical, but you should check out Claremont's folk music shop. They give a fabulous music presentation complete with goat toenail shakers. We loved them so much we had to buy our own toenail shakers!
